Conversations underway to fill Fufeng gap

By Doug Barrett Feb 15, 2023 | 8:07 AM

Lessons learned from the failed Fufeng project may impact future developments in Grand Forks.

City Administrator Todd Feland says CFIS reviews and questions surrounding foreign investments are taking on a greater role when it comes to economic development opportunities.

Feland says one of the more complicated projects still on the drawing board is the proposed $3.5 billion dollar Northern Plains Nitrogen fertilizer plant.  “Generally the countries that move forward with fertilizer plants are centered in the Middle East…Russia…and China.  It may have an impact on the NPN project.”

Details surrounding NPN were first announced in 2013.

Grand Forks Mayor Brandon Bochenski says he recently met with U.S. Senator John Hoeven – who along with the rest of the congressional team and governor have pledged to help find a replacement project for corn milling plant.  “I’ve heard some  rumblings of a couple of names.  I don’t want to list them right now.  American companies….names you’ve heard of that are interested in doing something.”

Bochenski says the goal is to find the right company that makes the right fit for the region.

Bochenski made his comments on KNOX’s “Critical Thought” program .
