Grand Forks Public Schools Superintendent Terry Brenner Warns Of “Perfect Budgetary Storm

(KNOX) –The Grand Forks School Board will be reevaluating its general fund balance goal. Board members have agreed to eventually hold a work session that was recommended by Superintendent Terry Brenner.

The board plans to look again at the district’s Guiding Change Document. The document was drafted in 2022 as part of a budget realignment process, and it handles the general fund. The general fund includes a good portion of the district’s expenses, which includes staff salaries and benefits.

The document also desires that the district maintain 15 percent of its general fund balance every year. This would be roughly $20 million out of a budget total of $134 million.

Brenner says that a “ perfect budgetary storm” is coming upon the district, and that its current goal is virtually impossible.

The district also says that with 85 percent of the fund being budgeted for personnel costs, there will be nothing left if the district needs to save 15 percent annually.

Board members have agreed to reevaluate the goal, but no official action was taken at Monday’s meeting when they discussed this matter.
