GF County approves jail bids

By Doug Barrett Sep 20, 2023 | 8:45 AM

The Grand Forks County Commission has approved the latest bid package for expansion of the county jail and juvenile detention center. The $23.3 million dollar bid pushes the total construction cost to $36.8 million dollars – slightly below budget estimates.

The current jail has 248 beds – but the functional capacity is closer to 180. Fewer open beds also cuts into the ability to house federal inmates which brings in additional dollars to the county.

The board approved the bid four-to-one with Commissioner Mark Rustad casting the lone “no” vote.

When the correctional center opened 16 years ago it cost $16 million dollars to build.
