North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) has officially announced the naming of Dr. Denise Lajimodiere as ND’s next Poet Laureate.
During the 68th Legislative Assembly the Legislature passed a Senate Concurrent Resolution which named Dr. Lajimodiere to this honorary position – effective July 2023.
She moved back to North Dakota in 1972 to complete a teaching degree at UND. She also completed her master’s and doctorate degrees there.
Lajimodiere will serve a 2-year term through June 2025 coinciding with the next ND biennium. She succeeds Larry Wiowode who passed away spring 2022.
North Dakota has named a Poet Laureate since 1957. The honorary post promotes reading, writing and an appreciation of poetry through public appearances and teaching opportunities across the state.
