UND professor from Ukraine: ‘My heart is breaking’

A UND biology professor — and Ukraine native — says people in his homeland will never forget the crimes committed by Russia during the war that is now in its 15th day.

Vasyl Tkach was among a panel of UND educators with ties to Ukraine and eastern Europe who discussed the situation during a virtual webinar today (Thu).

“Let’s put to rest one of the biggest lies of the Kremlin that Ukraine is somehow threatening Russia.” he said. “It cannot threaten Russia. The difference in size is bigger than David and Goliath, really.”

While discussions about oil and gas make headlines, Tkach says the “real time bomb” is what will happen later this year and next year in agriculture.

“The (Ukraine) farmers will not be able to plant their fields in time which will mean a food shortage for millions,” Tkach said.

He added that since Ukraine is one of the world’s top exporters of grain, there will be starvation in countries far from Ukraine.

“It probably also means higher prices for the grain produced by North Dakota farmers,” Tkach said.
