(KNOX) – One North Dakota lawmaker is expecting school lunches will again be a topic of consideration when the Legislature meets in special session.
District 18 Senator Scott Meyer (R-Grand Forks) says he has heard rumblings among his colleagues that they may again bring forward a school lunch proposal, hoping to affect a November election for a constitutional amendment on the issue.
School lunches were addressed in 2025, and addressed again without action in the previous 2026 special session. With a $130 million constitutional amendment vote looming, Meyer says the subject is still front facing. He is hopeful the legislature would see previous laws to feed all children without lunch shaming as an unfunded mandate, forcing the state to pick up the tab on bad lunch debt.
Governor Kelly Armstrong announced a special session will convene September 2nd.
