(KTTC) – Minnesota’s Paid Leave program, which rolled out at the start of this year, has received 100,000 applications in its first six months, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

DEED leaders said they’ve approved roughly 75,000 applications so far. About a quarter of those applications were either denied or withdrawn.

“We’ve really leveled off [since the initial surge of applications in January],” said DEED Deputy Commissioner Evan Rowe, “We’re seeing a pretty consistent application volume as we’ve gotten into April, May, and June.”

The program has so far distributed roughly $600 million, money that’s been drawn from employee and employer contributions, a legislative account, and a leftover pool of roughly $70 million that went unused during the program’s setup.

“The average weekly benefit payment is about $1,083,” Rowe said, “The maximum possible under the law is set at the statewide average weekly wage.”

DEED leaders said they’re pleased with what they’re seeing so far, and they planned to use the first few months of the program to continue fine-tuning internal operations.

“I think we’re going to continue to be looking to see what are the things that would require a statutory change, but… even just in these first six months, we’ve been really focused on what are the things that we can do ourselves,” Rowe said.

DEED Leaders say medical and bonding leave are the most common types of leave they approve, but that safety and caretaking leave also see a fair number of applications.
