(KNOX) – Jake Lanes will continue to serve as Emerado mayor after the write-in winner of the town’s mayoral election declined to take office.
No candidates including Lanes officially ran for mayor in the June 9 election. Terry Kramer received the most write-in votes with 26 and Lanes received the second most with eight.
Lanes had been mayor the last four years, but did not seek reelection. He says he does not want to serve as mayor again, but he doesn’t want to leave a vacancy and have someone do the job who doesn’t want to either. He will continue in the role unless another candidate is found to replace him. Lanes is also the town’s fire chief.
Fewer than 50 people voted for mayor in Emerado, which is a town that has a population of roughly 450 people.
