(KNOX) – Former UND Hockey Star and Three Time Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews has retired after 16 NHL seasons. Toews played with the Chicago Blackhawks for 15 seasons, and he played his last season in 2025-2026 with the Winnipeg Jets. He played at UND for two seasons before making his NHL debut with Chicago in 2007.
In 76 career games, the Winnipeg native recorded 40 goals, 45 assists, 85 points and a +38 plus-minus rating in two seasons with the then Fighting Sioux. He helped UND reach the Frozen Four in both seasons, but they lost to Boston College in the national semifinals each time.
He was named the NCAA West Regional MVP in 2006 during the national tournament. He also received NCAA West First All-American Team and WCHA Second All-American Team honors in the 2006-2007 season.
Toews was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. He played his first season in 2007-2008, and he was named the second youngest team captain in NHL history during his second season with Chicago. He would serve as team captain for 14 seasons.
Toews spent 15 seasons with the Blackhawks; winning three Stanley Cup Championships, a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2010, and he was named to the 2007-2008 NHL All Rookie team. He also won the Frank J. Selke Award, the Mark Messier Leadership Award, and he was a six time all star.
Toews also played for Team Canada in the Olympics, helping his home country win two gold medals. He also helped team Canada win the World Cup in 2016, a world championship in 2007 and back to back World Juniors championships in 2006 and 2007.
Toews didn’t play for two seasons because of Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and because of issues from long COVID. He finished his tenure with the Blackhawks in 2023, and returned to the league last season.
He played his last year with the Winnipeg Jets. Toews grew up in Winnipeg as a Jets fan, and he signed a one year contract with the team last summer. Winnipeg ended up missing the playoffs this past season.
Toews finished his career with 383 goals, 529 assists, 912 points, and a +138 plus-minus in 1,149 regular season games. He also recorded 45 goals, 74 assists, 119 points and a +12 plus-minus in 137 playoff games.
