(KNOX) – The Grand Forks Cultural Committee will host a Juneteenth event this Friday, June 19 at University Park. The event will be from 5-8pm, and it is free to attend.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves, specifically marking the day in 1865 when Union Troops went to Galveston, Texas to announce that the last group of people enslaved in the state were free. It was officially made a federal holiday and signed into law in June 2021.
During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation technically freed all slaves in confederate states in 1863, but it took two and a half years for the news to arrive to Texas and for it to be enforced.
Friday’s event will be the third annual Juneteenth program the cultural committee will be having. There will be food trucks, musical performances, and several other activities.
