(Valley News Live)- The man charged in connection with a June assault on a Detroit Lakes bank employee was booked into the Becker County Jail on Thursday and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday morning.
Jose Gregorio Boller Pena, 39, faces felony charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence in Becker County District Court. His first appearance is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday.
Boller Pena was detained by Homeland Security Investigations officials and Houston law enforcement on June 24, weeks after the incident. He was booked into Becker County on August 14.
According to a criminal complaint filed June 30, the incident occurred around 12:19 p.m. on June 12 at Midwest Bank, 613 Highway 10 East in Detroit Lakes. A bank employee told police she was sitting in her vehicle during her lunch break when a masked man appeared at her car door, covered her mouth, and pointed a handgun at her. The suspect gestured for her to move to the passenger seat before fleeing into nearby woods when a co-worker heard the woman screaming.
Investigators used surveillance footage and license plate reader data to identify a gray 2011 Mazda 3 connected to the scene. Detectives linked the vehicle to Boller Pena, who had recently worked at a local dairy farm and cashed a paycheck at Midwest Bank the morning of the incident. After the assault, investigators tracked his vehicle and cell phone south through Kansas and into Texas, where he was detained.
A backpack found in his vehicle contained dark clothing, a full face mask, and black gloves with gray rubber palms, consistent with the victim’s description of her attacker, along with a knife, duct tape, and other items.
