(KNOX) – Wildfires are continuing to rage in northeastern Minnesota. Firefighters are fighting at least 17 active fires across the Superior National Forest. A Camp Fire north of Winton has affected over 2,200 acres, and the Sioux Fire has expanded to nearly 3,500 acres. Residents in Lake, St. Louis and Cook counties have been evacuated and heavy wildfire smoke is creating unhealthy air quality in and around Ely that is expected to continue into Thursday.
Lightning-sparked wildfires have burned thousands of acres since July 7. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been closed to the public since Tuesday.
