(KNOX) – A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on Interstate-94 west of Valley City, highlighting North Dakota’s law that allows walking on interstate shoulders.

The highway patrol received multiple calls Saturday about a man walking along I-94 west of Valley City. Troopers made contact with him, but he declined assistance. The next day, a body was found in a ditch, a victim of a hit-and-run.

What many drivers might not know is that it’s actually legal to walk on interstate shoulders in North Dakota.

In North Dakota there is no such law saying you can’t walk or bike along the interstate system and actually we see bicyclists along the interstate system in North Daoka especially during the summer months. You may see pedestrians at some point in time throughout the year.
