ND AG: Devils Lake health board violated open meeting law

By Pat Sweeney Jul 7, 2022 | 8:25 AM

North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley says the Lake Region District Health Board violated the open meetings law by failing to properly give notice of a special meeting of a committee.

The Health Board created a committee to conduct interviews for the administrator position. All five people on the committee were board members.

In March, the committee held a special meeting by phone to discuss whether an applicant could continue to be a member of the county commission while serving on the board.

Wrigley ruled that the committee posted the notice on the Board’s Facebook page and website, but did not post it at the principal office… provide notice to the official newspaper… or include the info necessary for the public to join the call.

Therefore, he said, the Board violated open meetings laws.

Wrigley said the board must provide free copies of the minutes of the special meeting to a Devils Lake reporter who requested the A-G’s opinion…and anyone else who asks for them.
