The East Grand Forks Police Department paused last week to acknowledge the accomplishment of officers and staff. The awards ceremony covered everything from years of service to marksman and military service recognition. The department also handed out several lifesavings awards.
Police Chief Mike Hedlund says one that stands out is an early morning catch by Sgt. Greg Gahlon who noticed an open garage door while on patrol during the early morning hours on January 27th. Upon further inspection Gahlon discovered an elderly unresponsive female lying on the floor in minus -18 degree weather. Authorities used blankets from inside the home to warm the woman until ambulance crews arrived on scene.
Other awards included officers who responded to drug overdoses and medical emergencies. Sgt. Tony Hart received the Police Commendation Award after undergoing a heart transplant in early 2021.
