(KNOX) – There’s a food fight on Capitol Hill.
North Dakota’s U.S. Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer signed a letter to the USDA saying it doesn’t make sense to reclassify potatoes as a grain… and not a vegetable.
The change would be reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for 2025 through 2030.
The senators say, “Any change to potatoes’ classification would immediately confuse consumers, retailers, restaurant operators, growers, and the entire supply chain.”
They add consumers would miss out on vital nutrients if the reclassification occurs.
