GF council to review Greenway enhancements

By Doug Barrett Jan 16, 2024 | 8:50 AM

The Grand Forks council will take another look tonight (Tuesday) at planned enhancements to a stretch of the Greenway that falls between 47th and 62nd Avenues South.

Over the years the city has seen acts of vandalism in the undeveloped area to include excessive trash…property damage…theft…and the cutting down of trees.

A portion of the project was originally outside the city limits when the flood protection system was built. The nearby neighborhood called Shady Ridge was annexed in 2014.

A survey of residents raised questions about who would pay for the improvements – – some dislike expanded parking in the area.

Council President Dana Sande says he would rather see increased enforcement vs disrupting established neighborhoods.  “I would prefer to see us rigorously police and enforcement that area and cleanup the mess first to see how it goes.”

Council V-P Bret Weber says extending the paved trail…clearing the area…adding benches…trash cans…and extending a trail from the parking to the fishing areas makes sense.  “If there are problems one of the best solutions seems to be bringing more people and more traffic rather than conducting more law enforcement.  That’s one of the basic principals of urban design.”

The council voted 3-3 at last week’s COW meeting to continue working on the design plan.
