Future of NW MN bridge in question post fire

By Doug Barrett Jun 15, 2023 | 12:57 PM

The future of a low-volume wooden bridge near Sabin (MN) that was severely damaged by a fire this week will likely be the topic of a future meeting between Clay County Highway and the local township board.

County Engineer Justin Sorum says the rural bridge was built from railroad ties and was rated as structurally deficient.  The rural crossing spanned the Buffalo River and was scheduled to be decommissioned at some point down the road.
Sorum says he doesn’t have a traffic count for the bridge – but it was likely only used a few times a day.  He says replacing the crossing will be a joint decision.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says the fire was reported around 9:30 Tuesday night.  Empting says due to “suspicious circumstances” the Minnesota State Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation.
The bridge remains closed due to the damage.
