(KNOX) – Last month, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz issued an executive order that bans all nonferrous mining in the Boundary Waters area. The order instructs the Department of Natural Resources and the Pollution Control Agency to stop issuing leases and permits in the Rainy River Headwaters Watershed.
Minnesota State Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson is against the Governor’s order, and he believes that Walz is going back on his word. He tells KNOX’s Aaron McWilliams.
Johnson also says that this decision will harm not only Northern Minnesotans, but all of America.
Johnson believes that Northern Minnesotans are also not happy with the Governor’s decision.
Walz’s order comes months after Congress voted to overturn a 20-year ban on mining in the area, which allows new copper and nickel mining proposals.
