Flood Warning issued for Grand Forks County

By Doug Barrett Apr 15, 2023 | 7:56 PM

A FLOOD WARNING has been issued for all of Grand Forks County.  The National Weather Service has issued varying degrees of WARNINGS for all counties adjacent to the Red River in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Overland flooding is the main concern right now from snowmelt.  Grand Forks street crews Friday evening set up barricades to close North 55th Street from University Avenue to 6th Avenue North due to water on the road.

The Minnesota DOT closed Highway 200 on the western limits of Ada.  Motorists should use an alternate route. UPDATE: The Minnesota Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 9 south of Ada and Highway 200 west of Ada. Water levels have receded in this area.  (4/16 3pm).

Travel speeds have been reduced on ND 17 near ND 18 South due to water on the road.

The west bound exit ramp #324 along I-94 (Wheatland exit) is temporarily closed.

The latest Flood Outlook from the NWS in Grand Forks suggests the melting snow has been slowed by cooler temperatures.  River responses are still expected to become more widespread in the coming days.  The rate of the rise and ultimate crest levels remain uncertain due to the rate of snowmelt and runoff.

Forecasters have posted their first look at river levels for GF/EGF and put the “Red” at just over 39 feet by Saturday.  Flood stage is 28.  Moderate flooding is considered at the 40 foot mark.  The Red Lake River at Crookston is still projected to reach 20.5 feet this week before slowly falling.  Flood stage in Crookston is 15 feet.

Both the 6-10 and 8-14 day forecast have temps trending below normal with precipitation at or slightly below normal.  The forecast for the coming week has daytime temps climbing above freezing and lows dropping below the freezing mark.
