(KNOX) – A solar farm is being built for the East Grand Forks Public School District and it will be designed to save the district hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs. The solar farm will be on district property next to Central Middle School.
The farm won’t be operational until next year, even though some of the panels are already installed. The solar farm will cost $1.2 million, but is mainly being paid for through grants. $500,000 will be covered by the federal Solar for Schools program, and the district will cover $200,000.
East Grand Forks Public Schools expects to save at least $50,000 annually when the project is finished, where the savings equate to over half of least Central Middle School’s annual electricity costs.
Building the solar farm through the Solar for Schools grant funding requires districts to teach about the solar farm. Curriculum will be submitted within six months of when the project is completed.
Minnesota based company Ziegler CAT was awarded a bid for the project.
