(KNOX) – The second North Dakota Domestic Violence Court is expected to open in December in Bismarck.
The Grand Forks County Domestic Violence Court was the first one to open back in 2018. The Northeast Central Judicial District established it along with CVIC(Community Violence Intervention Center.)
This type of court is a post conviction court that has the goal of improving compliance and accountability for offenders.
Post conviction cases include defendants who are ordered to participate in court when being sentenced. The defendants are then required to comply with various conditions. The court is allowed to require compliance by imposing a suspended $500 fine the defendants would pay if they don’t go through with the program.
A defendant’s compliance is determined by whether they attend hearings, and their progress is managed by a domestic violence court project coordinator.
Before the Grand Forks County Domestic Violence Court was established, domestic violence cases after a conviction were being monitored by the clerk’s office.
