(KNOX) –The city of Grand Forks and North Dakota Department of Transportation have been working on several construction projects that started in the summer. City Engineer Christian Danielson presented an update on Monday to the City Council. He says there are some continuing projects that will be completed by the end of this year.

The biggest construction project still happening is the underpass project at South 42nd Street and DeMers Avenue. Danielson says that crews are relocating city utilities such as water lines and they are building shoofly tracks so trains can bypass the project site.

When the shooflies are completed and the utilities have been moved, the crews will dig out the hole that will be for the underpass. This part of the project is scheduled to start next Monday, and the project will then become a 24-hour work site where multiple crews will be working for 10 to 14 days to finish digging.

Danielson also says the underpass project will continue into next year, which will include paving on the bridges over the underpass in 2027. The road closures that are around the intersection are also expected to continue in 2027.

Danielson also says that there are at least nine other DOT and city projects that will happen in 2027.

Those projects include mill and overlay work on North Washington Street, intersection improvements at Gateway Drive and Columbia Road, concrete pavement restoration that will happen on South Washington Street from Hammerling Avenue to 32nd Avenue South, a resurfacing project on the Point Bridge, a reconstruction project on Minnesota Avenue, final paving on 27th Avenue North, a reconstruction project on University Avenue from Columbia Road to North 25th Street, paving that will continue on on 47th Avenue South, and a reconstruction on 32nd Avenue South from Cherry Street to Belmont Road.

Danielson also says this lines up with what was approved in the city’s 2027 budget and it is “subject to change if the projects come in lower or higher.”

There is a map of the city’s 2026 road projects that can be found here.
