(KNOX) – The city of Grand Forks hosted a public meeting Tuesday about the future of the Riverside Pool.

Grand Forks Water Works Director Melanie Parvey says underground pipes are leaking below and the basin will need to be replaced. She also says that an overall replacement project would cost around $8.8 million.

Two concepts were presented about how the replacement could happen. One option is having a pool with 6,950 square feet of water surface, while a second option would feature 7,700 square feet. The second option also has a zero depth entry where children can walk safety into the pool. The water levels at the current pool are between 3 to 12 feet deep.

The pool would most likely have construction start in 2028, and it would be completed by 2029. The pool would be able to be used for at least 50 years.

The pool was first built in 1941 and it is owned by the city and operated in partnership with the Grand Forks Park District. There was a capital repairs project on the pool in 2008 that cost $1.3 million.
