(KNOX) – North Dakota Republican State Representative Mike Nathe of Bismarck has announced a bill that would offer teachers an annual bonus so they would come to North Dakota and stay long term.
The Support Teachers and Youth Succeed stipend, also known as STAYS, would award teachers a $3,400 bonus who are under contract and taught the entire previous year. It would also be given to teachers who retired at the end of the previous year. This comes as rural and urban schools across the state are reporting teacher shortages.
Nathe says the bill would come from 10 percent of the state’s Common Schools Trust Fund earnings for two years. He tells KNOX’s The Ryan Cunningham Show.
Nathe also says that there would be a 25 percent cap on the average teacher base salary.
The bill is being supported by both North Dakota State K-12 Superintendent Levi Bachmeier and North Dakota Lieutenant Governor Michelle Strinden.
The bill would need to be approved during the next legislative session, which will start in January.
