(KNOX/KFGO) – The U.S. Senate has passed the Protect College Sports Act, which aims to protect the name, image, and likeness rights of student athletes as well as to promote fair competition.
The bill allows athletes to transfer schools only once without losing eligibility, it prevents professional athletes from playing college sports and it prohibits football coaches from quitting during a season to be hired by another school.
North Dakota Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, as well as Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith voted for the bill.
The bill will now go to the U.S. House, which is on recess until after the November election.
The legislation is also being supported by the athletics directors and presidents of North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota.
