(KNOX) –The Grand Forks City Council is considering clarifying rules for using e bikes within the city. Several council members have been hearing complaints and safety concerns, and Mayor Brandon Bochenski has fielded calls on KNOX about how the bikes have been used in the city and even on the Greenway. City Council President Dana Sande has also heard complaints on air, and he says at Monday’s city council meeting.
Grand Forks Police Chief Jason Freedman explains that there are a lot of challenges that come with enforcing these ordinances.
Freedman is also recommending other groups and entities like Grand Forks Public Health and Safe Kids Grand Forks help clarify the ordinances.
There are considered to be three different classes of e bikes. Class 1 bikes are pedal assisted and reach up to 20mph, Class 2 are throttle assisted but end up cutting out at 20mph, and Class 3 are pedal assist that go as high as 28mph.
The Council unanimously approved city staff to conduct research and eventually made suggestions for e bikes, motorized bikes and motorized scooters.
