North Dakota’s State Board of Higher Education Votes To Remove TikTok Ban

(KNOX) –North Dakota’s State Board of Higher Education voted last Thursday to remove a ban on using TikTok on university-owned devices. 

The board voted to reverse North Dakota University System’s ban after looking at how several ownership and security changes were made. 

The removal of the ban follows Governor Kelly Armstrong’s decision to get rid of a ban on state-owned devices. 

Former Governor Doug Burgum issued an executive order in 2022, and banned TikTok because of national security concerns. The app was owned by Chinese parent company ByteDance and there were concerns the company would have unauthorized access to user data.

TikTok’s U.S. operations now have a U.S.-based joint venture that is mainly owned by American investors. It is also run by a board of directors that are mostly American.

North Dakota University System campuses are now able to request TikTok access on university-owned devices.
