Grand Forks Police Department Temporarily Suspending Ride Along Program

(KNOX) –The Grand Forks Police Department is temporarily suspending its ride along program. This is because of a current staff shortage and the number of officers that are currently in training. Sergeant Rory Suby is not sure when the ride alongs will start again, as the department’s goal right now is to eventually be fully staffed.

The police department only has 97 officers right now, as it’s authorized to have 101. The department received a Community Oriented Policing Services Grant so they can hire three new downtown officers. The grant funded positions can’t be filled until there are 98 full time officers. 

The city has listed a total of 97 officers, but four of them are in the field training program, three others are at the Law Enforcement Training Academy and another three begin training in Grand Forks later this month.

The Department has been advertising that it is looking to hire three officers by September 30th. Selected candidates will receive job offers this winter and the new hires will then be at the academy from January to April.
