(Valley News Live) – A Grafton man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he assaulted a woman, restricted her breathing and tried to stop her from calling 911.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Walsh County District Court, officers were called to the 600 block of Eastern Avenue around 3:22 a.m. Aug. 17 for a reported domestic dispute.
The victim told police that 44 year-old Jonathan Coffman had been drinking all day and became increasingly aggressive.
Documents say Coffman shoved the victim into a wall, grabbed her by the shirt and pulled it so tight around her neck she couldn’t breathe. He then asked her “do you want me to murder you?” while her airway was obstructed.
The complaint says he also hit her in the face several times, knocking her to the ground and causing minor injuries to her mouth.
Documents say when the victim tried to get her phone to call for help, Coffman blocked her from reaching it and left the home with it. The victim told police she then went to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
Police say Coffman was found a short time later in an alley in the 600 block between Hill Avenue and Griggs Avenue.
The complaint alleges he initially identified himself as “Steve,” had his beard tucked into his shirt and was wearing compression sleeves to cover distinctive tattoos in an attempt to hide his identity.
Coffman is charged with three Class C felonies — aggravated assault domestic violence, interfering with an emergency phone call and terrorizing — and one Class A misdemeanor count of providing false information to law enforcement.
