North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services Announces First Human Case of West Nile Virus

(KNOX/Valley News Live) – The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services announced the first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in the state. The person is a Cass County resident and they have been hospitalized. This comes after weeks of mosquito pool detections across the state, where five counties have reported mosquito pools testing positive for the virus. One of those counties is Grand Forks. An animal in Sioux County and a bird in Richland County also tested positive for the virus. 

Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms, but those who do develop illness commonly report fever, headache, body or joint aches or rash. In severe cases, symptoms can include stiff neck, altered mental status, paralysis, coma or death. People over 60 and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk for developing West Nile neuroinvasive disease.
