(KNOX) – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz spoke at a press briefing for the wildfires that continue to rage across Northern Minnesota. Walz was in Ely on Monday with first responders and state officials. He says some improvements have been made, but there is still more that needs to be done.
Walz was also asked about whether he would call a special session for the Legislature regarding the fires. With lawmakers currently being out of session, he says he’s considering calling a special session for August 12.
More than 64,000 acres have been burned. Some entry points to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness have opened, and some evacuation zones have been downgraded. Overnight access permits are still canceled through at least Wednesday.
