(KNOX) -A 26-year-old Grand Forks man is facing three felony charges, after police found him with a 13-year-old girl at a park in East Grand Forks. He says he met with the girl several times and that he raped her multiple times.
Kristian Michael Akins was charged last Friday in Polk County District Court. East Grand Forks Police arrived at Sherlock Park last Thursday night after 9:30 when they received a report of two people who were near a tree line. Akins and a 13-year-old girl were seen together and they both originally said they did not have any sexual contact.
Akins allowed an officer to look through his phone. Akins was arrested when the officer found messages that had explicit images, and found messages that showed the two had affection for each other.
Akins admitted to police that he raped her several times and that he knew she was underage. He also told investigators the pictures on his phone will cause a problem.
They met each other on Snapchat, and the girl told police all the rapes happened at Sherlock Park between July 11 and July 22. She completed a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exam at Sanford Hospital in Fargo.
Akins is currently in custoday and he faces a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, a felony count of possessing child sexual abuse material and a felony count of distributing sexually explicit material to a child electronically.
The first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge has a minimum sentence of 12 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison.
