(KNOX) – Northern Minnesota received much needed rain over the weekend as it continues to deal with raging wildfires, but at the same time 13,000 lightning strikes may have caused more wildfires to start. The wildfires are believed to have originally started because of lightning strikes that happened on July 7. Phillip Manuel with the National Weather Service says the wildfires will take several months to contain.
There are currently at least 20 active wildfires in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and it’s being reported that more than 70,000 acres have been burned. There have been air quality alerts issued throughout Northern Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota because of smoke from the fires.
