(KNOX) – A North Dakota man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for selling fentanyl that led to the overdose death of a Pipestone, Minnesota man. 46-year-old Jake Northern, pleaded guilty to fentanyl trafficking earlier this week in U.S. District court.

Northern admitted in his plea that he intentionally distributed pressed fentanyl pills to users and other distributors across southern Minnesota from February through April 2023.

In April 2023, Northern sold around $200 worth of pressed fentanyl pills to a 26-year-old man. The victim consumed Northern’s fentanyl and subsequently died from an overdose.

Northern had a prior federal conviction for possessing and distributing cocaine that resulted in a 96 month prison sentence. The prior conviction increased the penalties in the overdose case.
