(KNOX) – An apparent AI-generated image of a tornado has led to a discussion of what may be considered “weather terrorism”.
During a bout of severe weather Tuesday, Belcourt residents on social media were given a fake image of a tornado near the town. The image led to a flood of calls to emergency management and panic.
The image was also sent to news media outlets, but the image was proven to be a fake.
Jenna Parisien, Turtle Mountain emergency manager, said the picture was all the more believable due to the actual weather conditions at the time, but also said she truly believed the image was intended to be just a prank.
There was no word as to whether charges would be filed.
