East Grand Forks Considering Tweaks to Greenway Vehicles

(KNOX) – East Grand Forks may tweak its ordinance over what type of motorized vehicles are allowed in the Greenway.

City leaders say there has been an increase in complaints as the popularity of e-bikes, motorized bikes, e-motorcycles and motorized scooters grow. Right now e-bikes and scooters are allowed on Greenway trails.

The issue was brought forward by East Grand Forks Police Chief Mike Hedlund.

Council President Brian Larson says he has noticed a sharp uptick in the number of e-motorcycles all over the Greenway. Larson says he feels vehicles that “assist with pedals” are generally acceptable but when the “pedals go away and it becomes a dirt bike that’s not OK.”

During a work session several members suggested increased signage as a way to get the word out on what is allowed under the local ordinance. The council is expected to incorporate at least one provision in state law limiting the engines in e-bikes to 750 watts vs the current 1,000 watts.
