(KNOX) – The North Dakota U.S. Attorney’s Office and FBI have recovered over $4.8 million dollars that was scammed from Dickinson Public Schools.
The money was fraudulently obtained during a business email compromise scheme and traced to a Citibank account. A civil forfeiture complaint was filed and Citibank issued a check on April 22nd to the United States Marshals Service.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is now working to return the money to the school system. The case remains under investigation to determine who was behind the theft.
Grand Forks Public Schools experienced a similar theft, totaling around $2 million. At last report, authorities believed they could recover about half of the money.
