(KNOX) – GRAND FORKS — Hundreds of local students are ready to stay out of danger this summer after taking part in Safe Kids Grand Forks’ water safety program.

It’s the 29th years of the program, and this year saw the program service nearly 800 students from 18 different schools in the region.  Driving boats, properly wearing life jackets, and the realities of hypothermia were all a part of the curriculum.

Carma Hanson, director of Safe Kids in Grand Forks, says they try to impress upon kids the hope is to never be in a situation where they need rescue, but having basic water safety knowledge is important for all ages.
Unintentional drownings are the leading cause of death in very young children, the second leading cause for school-aged children.
