(KNOX) – A 32-year-old Grand Forks woman who is charged with third degree murder in Minnesota didn’t show up for her sentencing hearings relating to drug related charges in Grand Forks on Monday. This is because she’s in custody at the Northwest Regional Corrections Center in Moorhead.

Megan Thorsen is waiting to be sentenced in two North Dakota cases and one Minnesota case. She was scheduled to make a Zoom appearance in Grand Forks County Monday.

She is charged in Grand Forks with Class A felony delivery/possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance in a correctional facility, and she is also facing a Class B felony possession charge with the intent to deliver fentanyl. Class A felonies come with a maximum 20 year prison sentence.

Court documents say Thorsen was arrested amid a traffic stop in Grand Forks in August 2025 in light of a warrant against her in Minnesota. Officers discovered she had 6.7 grams of fentanyl in her possession, with another 0.44 grams in her purse.

She was being held at the Grand Forks County Correctional Facility, and five days later she and two other inmates appeared to be under the influence. Thorsen was searched once again, and officers found 19.9 grams of fentanyl hidden in her bra.

The cases in Grand Forks have had four sentencing hearings postponed and and a judge issued a bench warrant with no extradition, because extraditing her from jail in Minnesota could lead to more delays.

Thorsen is one of two women charged with felony third degree murder in Polk County for unintentionally causing a person’s death when distributing fentanyl, and the maximum penalty is a 25 year prison sentence. The second woman charged, Rachael Boswell, has already been sentenced to seven years and two months in prison, which includes 89 days of credit served.

Court documents say the East Grand Forks Police Department responded to a fatal fentanyl in August 2025, two days before she was arrested in Grand For County. Boswell made contact with Thorsen on the victim’s behalf to buy drugs from her. The victim paid Thorsen $80 and all three of them met in Grand Forks to make the drug deal. The victim then drove Boswell home, and court documents also say that Thorsen told Boswell not to have anyone take the fentanyl by itself because of how strong it was.

Thorsen pleaded guilty to murder this past July, and her sentencing in this case is scheduled for November 12th at 9am.
