(KNOX) – The jury in the Vincent Villarreal murder trial started deliberations on Wednesday at 4pm and went on for two and a half hours before ending for the day.
The 34-year-old East Grand Forks man is facing Class AA felony murder charges, and he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty. He is accused of shooting and killing his father, Jeffrey Shulzitski in December 2020 at the then Budget Inn Express at 3400 Gateway Drive in Grand Forks.
The defense opened and rested its case on Wednesday without calling any witnesses. They say several of the 29 witnesses the prosecution called had issues with recalling details of a six year old incident because of their history of drug use.
Prosecutors rested their case Tuesday and have said that a bullet from the murder scene matched a bullet found in Villarreal’s car. They also mentioned that police believe Villarreal broke a window to get into his father’s hotel room after the murder in order to get a cell phone.
The jury is scheduled to resume this morning and will continue until it reaches a unanimous verdict.
