By Alex Carmenaty Oct 7, 2026 | 6:46 AM

(KNOX) – Last week, Grand Forks Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Brenner announced he will be retiring after this school year and that his last day will be on June 30th, 2027. Brenner has worked in the Grand Forks School district since 1995, and has been superintendent since 2018. He says he thought about retirement over the past year. He tells KNOX’s Critical Thought With Noah Chelliah.

Brenner also says that a big part of his decision to retire is because he has a son who is currently a sophomore in high school.

Brenner wants the transition period to a new superintendent to be smooth. He also mentions that the school board will be discussing at its next meeting how to go about searching for his replacement.

He is from Devils Lake, and he started his education career as an elementary school principal and teacher in his hometown. He came to the Grand Forks school district in 1995, and has worked as the principal of both Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School and Wilder Elementary School. He has also been the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, and he served as adjunct assistant professor at UND.
