(KNOX) –The National Law Review and Wickard has named UND School of Law professor Carolyn Williams a Top 50 Legal Innovator in Academia.
Williams has participated in conversations about how AI is being used in legal education.
Williams and Kristen Davis of Stetson University founded the Legal Writing and Generative AI Convo Group in May 2023. The group meets every month and discusses current issues about generative AI. They also share research they’ve conducted, and more than 550 law professors participate in the group.
She wrote an article called Bracing for Impact: Revising Legal Writing Assessments Ahead of the Collision of Generative AI and the NextGen Bar Exam. The article received the Legal Writing Institute the 2025 Teresa Godwin Phelps Award for Scholarship in Legal Communication.
She also wrote the eighth edition of ALWD Guide to Legal Citation. The latest editions have various information about Artificial Intelligence.
Williams has been a professor at the UND School of Law since 2022, and she teaches courses on legal writing, research, advocacy and Artificial Intelligence
According to a release from the university, The Top 50 Legal Innovators in Academia list recognizes educators, administrators, researchers and academic leaders who are shaping the future of legal education. The release also says that the honorees were selected through an independent national committee made up of leaders from the academic and legal fields.
