(KNOX/KFGO/KVRR) -A former North Dakota Game and Fish director is avoiding jail time, but has been sentenced to two years of probation for a sex crime involving a child.

72-year-old Terry Steinwand of Mandan agreed to a plea deal after a Morton County district court judge rejected a previous proposed plea agreement to a felony charge. The state’s attorney’s office dismissed that charge and filed one count of misdemeanor sexual assault-offensive contact.
When he was originally charged, police said Steinwand admitted to touching a child inappropriately.
He spent 40 years with the Game and Fish department and he retired in 2021.
