(KNOX) -The city of Grand Forks could possibly bid the first phase of the Downtown Gateway and Greenway rehabilitation project as early as this fall. The project would add more recreational activities such as new playgrounds, a pickleball court, and a bridge that would connect to East Grand Forks that pedestrians can use.
The project is being proposed over three phases. As the city could bid phase one this fall, construction could start in 2027 or 2028. City Administrator Todd Feland says the city received a $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior for the project. The total cost for Phase one is projected to be roughly $7 million.
Phase one would include the green area east of Town Square by the Flood Obelisk. It would also have play areas, walking paths, a plaza and a park shelter.
Phase two would include the area that is north of DeMers Avenue. Recommended features include reconfigured parking, as well as a boat house and a warming house. It’s also been suggested that phase two include a fitness area, a pickleball court and a bridge pedestrians can use to cross the Red River into East Grand Forks.
Phase three would incorporate Town Square into the Greenway. This would create green area and a performance pavilion.
Feland didn’t have an exact number, but believes Phases two and three could cost tens of millions of dollars. The city says it’s only focusing on Phase one as of right now, unless it can receive another grant.
