Minnesota Regulators Reviewing Possible Changes To NorthMet Mining Project

By Alex Carmenaty Jul 31, 2026 | 8:45 AM

(Learfield) – Minnesota regulators are reviewing proposed changes to the long-delayed NorthMet copper-nickel mining project in northeastern Minnesota.

The Department of Natural Resources says the updated proposal includes changes to mine operations, ore transportation and tailings storage near Hoyt Lakes. One major change would replace rail shipment of material with an eight-mile covered conveyor system.

The DNR is now determining whether the revisions require additional environmental review and expects a decision within about a month.
