(KNOX) -An Underwood firefighter is being sent to northeastern Minnesota to help contain wildfires near Ely. The department was asked to send staff to support the crews that are currently working to fight the fires.
Brandon Evavold will spend at least two days helping with the wildfire response, as more than 1,000 firefighters are in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness batting at least two dozen fires.
There are currently at least 25 active fires in the BWCAW, and more than 60,000 acres have been burned. The fire started on July 7th because of lightning strikes, and more fires started because of repeated lightning and hot weather that is causing dry conditions.
