(KNOX) –An expansion project for Ryan Park and lake has started and is expected to be completed in late August. The project will cost $350,000.
The Ryan Lake Prairie Trail and Outdoor Classroom project will build on the existing site; with natural trails, edible plant beds and a place for students at nearby schools to learn in a classroom that will be an indoor-outdoor hybrid.
The park has biking and walking trails that connect to King’s Walk golf course, and the current construction will add natural paths that will connect the playground on the north side.
Four raised edible plant beds that can produce fruits vegetables and herbs will also be included in the construction. The plant beds can be filled with nutrient-dense soil and fertilizer because they will be structured.
The project is being funded by two grants from both the Outdoor Heritage Fund and the Garrison Diversion program. The Outdoor Heritage Fund will contribute $250,000 and the Garrison Diversion will give $50,000. The Grand Forks Park District will contribute the final $50,000.
Ryan Lake is a man made pond on the south side of Grand Forks that is 3.1 acres long. The lake currently has a picnic shelter, a small playground and a pier, and the walking trails, playground and shelter are scheduled to be ready in late August. The raised plant beds are expected to be finished in 2027.
