Minnesota Reaches Settlement With John Deere

(KNOX) – Minnesota has reached a settlement with John Deere resolving a lawsuit over farmers’ right to repair their own equipment.

The lawsuit, filed in January of 2025, claimed the company spent decades restricting farmers and independent repair shops from fixing John Deere machinery, forcing them to rely on costly authorized dealers who had exclusive access to the company’s diagnostic software.

Under the settlement, farmers and independent repair providers cannot be denied access to diagnostic tools and technical manuals for the next ten years. Those tools include the ability to read and reset fault codes, reprogram components, and restart machines after emissions-related shutdowns. The company will also pay $1 million to cover legal costs for Minnesota and the other states involved.

The settlement can be extended beyond ten years if John Deere violates its terms.
