(KNOX) –East Grand Forks Transit Manager Nancy Ellis spoke to City Council members on Tuesday about applying for annual operating funds from the Minnesota Department of Transportation for fixed bus route services and micro transit services. Those services are provided by Cities Area Transit, which serves both Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.
Ellis said the maximum amount of funding that could be requested for transit in 2027 is approximately $825,000, and fixed route services are estimated to cost almost $557,000. Almost $482,000 would come from state funds, roughly $219,500 would be federal money and nearly $124,000 would be local funds.
She offered two possible options for introducing micro transit services. One would be removing Route 4 from the bus schedule, which drives in East Grand Forks on DeMers Avenue and then loops around by Northland Community and Technical College. The other option would be to combine micro transit and Dial-A-Ride services so both riders are sharing the same transit. Ellis said that option would make Cities Area Transit have to set a mileage parameter, which could limit how far Dial-A-Ride riders could go without switching buses.
